Fine Cell Work
Jeffry Marcus

Jeffry Marcus learned to do patchwork and quilting at HMP Wandsworth. His very first quilt measured 7 by 10 feet and was entirely hand-sewn in a badly-lit cell that measured only 6 by 9 feet. The design was his own, and won a prize at a Quilters Guild Exhibition in Lords Indoor Cricket Ground in 1999.

This quilt, called "Jenesis", is Jeffry's second original quilt, designed while he was at HMP Wandsworth and finished when he got out of prison. It has 3,600 pieces in it and took 1,500 hours to make. Jeffry has explained that it is about a new beginning and the growth of self-belief. "Jenesis" is about rebirth.

The turquoise and cream sections make up an enormous J which stands for Jenesis, Jeffry, and jail. At the centre of the quilt is a fireburst or explosion which refers to the Big Bang. There is also a deliberate mistake in the quilt and a little heart near the top. "Jenesis" was shown at the National Festival of Quilts in Birmingham in 2003.

Jeffry has also made an avant-garde quilt for the artist Simon Moretti, which is currently on show in a Paris art gallery. Simon now wants to work with Jeffry on a collaborative quilt design.

Jeffry now has his own garden design business.
